The War on Women ContinuesIn Mississippi this month we fought back against the Tea Party’s War on Women and won! This crucial victory stopped a draconian bill that would have not only ended our basic rights and reproductive freedoms, but went so far as preventing doctors from saving a woman if her pregnancy endangered her life. This was just the opening salvo of their renewed War on Women. With inaction on job creation and deficit reduction dominating the headlines, our Tea Party Congress has been quietly opening a new front in their assault on women’s rights. Stand up with me, for your daughters, your granddaughters and all of the women you care about ! Give $10 or $15 today to send me to Washington to protect the progress women have made and continue to work toward protecting the health of all women. Conservatives want all insurance companies to pay for a man’s Viagra, but at the same time to permit hospitals to refuse emergency abortion care to women who would die without it. These are the priorities of the Tea Party and if they get their way it will set the clock back on the progress we made in the last 40 years. This is about life saving treatments that the Tea Party’s agenda seeks to destroy. Their agenda is far reaching including even preventive medicine. As women, we could be refused mammograms, and birth control could be denied because of a company’s religious beliefs. They've put our healthcare in their crosshairs, trying to put basic contraception out of reach for millions of women. I spent years working in our communities, including developing pregnancy prevention programs, and I can tell you that increasing access to contraception is key to reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions in this country. As a woman, I know our economic freedom depends on being able to prevent unplanned pregnancy and conservatives shouldn’t be taking this away from us. Access to free contraception has the promise of empowering millions more women across our country, but we must fight to protect this. Sincerely, Tarryl Clark Posted on November 30, 2011.
